Apply for a Prepaid Electricity Meter :
** Both the City of Cape Town and Eskom are licensed to supply electricity in the Cape Town municipal area.

** If you would like to apply for a prepaid electricity meter, first find out whether your area’s electricity is supplied by Eskom or the City.
** If you are in a City-supplied area you can apply for an electricity meter by following the process below.
How to apply for a prepaid electricity meter :
Top tip :
** Please fill in the form using black ink only. Use clear capital letters and tick applicable blocks.
** Because residents and businesses follow the same process when applying for a prepaid electricity meter, please be sure to detail which you are in your application.
** As a residential customer, you can either apply for the lifeline or domestic tariff — view the City’s 2016/17 Consumptive Tariffs in the document downloads for more information.
** As a business customer, you can apply for a tariff based on your expected monthly consumption.
Step 1 :
** Before you start your application, you must hire an electrical contractor to assess the cabling and infrastructure, and who will perform the work.
** Their details will need to be submitted along with your application.
Step 2 :
** You will need to download, from the document downloads section, and complete the New or Modified Electricity Supply application form.
** There is also an option to complete the form online, then download and print it.
Step 3 :
** With the form, you will also need to provide supporting documentation.
Submit with your form :
** a copy of the rates account for the property
** the property owner’s ID or a certified copy of their ID
** if the application is being made for a company, a letter of proxy from the company’s board of directors must be included, giving the person doing the application authority as well as providing certified identification of this person
** other documents as may be requested from time to time
Step 4 :
** Once you have completed the form and gathered your supporting documentation, you can submit it at any of the Customer Support Offices listed at the top of the application form.
Step 5 :
** If you are requesting a standard electricity connection as a resident, you will have to pay for the cost of connecting your property to the shared network. You may also have to contribute to the cost of the shared network based on how much electricity you require.
** Non-standard electricity connections are quotable, but only after you have paid for the required capacity of electricity your property is going to use. You may also have to pay a quotation fee before a quote is provided.

Step 6 :
** Once you have submitted your application, we are mandated to get back to you with a quote within 10 working days if there is existing infrastructure and within a month if the network must be extended.
Step 7 :
** When the City contacts you to arrange for installation, you must specify that you will require a prepaid electricity meter.
** If a new network needs to be installed, or the work is for industrial or commercial industries, all parties will agree on a time within which the City must provide a quote.
