SADC Secondary Schools Essay Competition :
** In an effort to encourage youth participation in regional integration affairs, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) launched the 18th edition of the SADC Secondary Schools Essay Competition, which is open to all secondary school students in the region.

** The topic and marking criteria are available below.
** The topic for the SADC Secondary School Essay Competition for 2017 is “Harnessing Sustainable Energy for Regional Economic Development.”
** This topic is derived from the 36th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government which is; “Resource Mobilization for investment in Sustainable Energy fnfrastructure for Inclusive SADC Industrialization for the Prosperity of the Region “.
** Learners should discuss how these would result in sustainable economic development.
Marking Guidelines :
** The essay should not be more than 1500 words and not shorter than 1000 words.
** The deadline for submission of entries to the Secretariat is 31 May 2017.
** Where entrants have access to computers it is advised that they type their entries and submit both soft and hard copies.
** They may sign and initial the hard copies to make sure that they have not been altered.
** The set questions below are meant to guide entrants when responding to the question above.
In answering the main question above, answer all the questions listed below :
** Discuss the economic benefits, which SADC Member States accrue in respect to investment in sustainable energy resources. (20 points)
** Discuss at length types of sustainable energy technologies that are upholding the “going green” global initiative (15 points)
** As a secondary school learner, identify key critical skills which are required to advance sustainable energy projects in the SADC Region. (20 points).
** Discuss and give examples of sustainable energy projects within the SADC region, which are geared towards regional integration and energy security supply. (15 points)
** Discuss the negative impact of energy sources on our environment and what measures SADC is putting in place to mitigate against these impacts. (15 points)
** What role should be played by the non-state actors, private sectors, Nongovernmental Organisations, traditional authorities and local communities in the supply and distribution of sustainable energy for economic and social development? (15 points)
Prizes :
** The three selected essays from each Province will be forwarded to the Department of Basic Education by 05 May 2017.
** The three national winning essays will be submitted to the SADC Secretariat on 31 May 2017.
** The SADC Secretariat has allocated a sum of US $ 1000 as prize money for the national winners of the competition in each Member State.
The prize money will be divided as follows :
** US $ 500 for the first prize
** US $ 300 for the second prize
** US $ 200 for the third prize
** Each candidate will receive the equivalent of the prize money in Rands.
** The three national winning essays will be forwarded to the SADC Secretariat for consideration in the regional competition.
Eligibility Criteria :
** Applicants must reside in South Africa,
** Applicants must be currently attending secondary school,
** Essays must not be more than 1500 words but not less than 1000 (Ariel 1.5 line spacing for typed essays),
** Submissions must be the unaided work of applicants,
** Submissions should be in English,
** The name of entrants should be the same as those that appear on the Identification Document (ID) or Passport,
** Applicants must be willing and fit to travel.
To submit an entry :
** Learners should forward their essays to a coordinator in their Province.
** Kindly check with the relevant co-ordinator regarding the closing date for submissions.
