Apply for New or Replacement Driver’s Licence :

How to apply for a driver’s licence :
** To apply for a driver’s licence you need to already be in possession of a valid learner’s licence, as well as have access to your own vehicle for the test.
Step 1 :
** Make an appointment at your nearest driver’s licence testing centre; these are at central locations throughout the city.
Step 2 :
** On the appointed day, arrive at the testing centre with all the necessary documentation and payments, ready to take your test.
** If you pass, you will be given any other documents you need to complete.
Please bring with you :
** official ID document
** learner’s licence
** 2 x ID sized black and white photographs
** appointment fee: R135 for light vehicles, R200 for heavy vehicles
** R140 for the issuing of the licence if you pass
Renew your driver’s licence card :
** A driver’s licence is valid for five years, after which you will have to renew it.
** If your card is expired, please follow these steps below.
Step 1 :
** Download and complete the Driver’s Licence Application form (a DL1 form) from the document downloads below.
Step 2 :
** Submit your completed form plus the necessary additional documents (outlined in the box below) to any driver’s licence testing centres.
** Remember to bring cash to pay for the renewal.
Additional documents to bring :
** ID document/foreign ID document
** current driver’s licence
** proof of address (see full list of what is considered acceptable)
** appointment fee: R135 for light vehicles, R200 for heavy vehicles
** 1 x ID sized black and white photograph (2, if licence has already expired)
** R140 for the issuing of the licence
Replace a lost or stolen your driver’s licence card :
Step 1 :
** You will need to complete a Declaration of Lost Documents form and a driver’s licence application form, found in the downloads sections below.
Step 2 :
** Submit your completed form plus the necessary additional documents (outlined in the box below) to any driver’s licence testing centres.
** Remember to bring cash to pay for the renewal.
You will need :
** two black and white ID-sized photographs
** ID book or passport
