Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 9 November
** The African National Congress won thirteen wards and the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters won one seat each in the by-elections contested in six provinces yesterday.

** The results saw all parties retaining the wards they won in the 2016 Municipal Elections in August – with one exception: the African National Congress lost one ward to the Economic Freedom Fighters in Polokwane, Limpopo.
** Voter turnout varied in the by-elections between 27.75% and 63.77% with an average of 43.51%.
The new councillors for the African National Congress are :
Eastern Cape : Pumzile Makaleni in Ward 17 in the Mbhashe Municipality – EC121. The seat was retained by the party with 73.53% of the 2 236 votes cast. Voter turnout was 46.79%.
Eastern Cape : Luyanda Tyhobeka in Ward 11 in the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality – EC129. The seat was retained by the party with 52.66.% of the 1 324 votes cast. Voter turnout was 27.75%.
Eastern Cape : Fikile Andrew Jama in Ward 7 in the Port St Johns Municipality – EC154. The seat was retained by the party with 83.28% of the 2 048 votes cast. Voter turnout was 45.78%
Eastern Cape : Onesimo Nofemele in Ward 26 in the Mbizana Municipality – EC443. The seat was retained by the party with 75.47% of the 1 787 votes cast. Voter turnout was 46.88%
Eastern Cape : Ayanda Tyokwana in Ward 4 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA. The seat was retained by the party with 77.89% of the 5 488 votes cast. Voter turnout was 47.08%.
Eastern Cape : Dolly Buti in Ward 14 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA. The seat was retained by the party with 67.54% of the 3 482 votes cast. Voter turnout was 33.94%
KwaZulu-Natal : Sonengaliphi Selby Maphumulo in Ward 1 in the uMuziwabantu Municipality – KZN214. The seat was retained by the party with 53.52% of the 2 774 votes cast. Voter turnout was 63.77%
KwaZulu-Natal : Thabisile Precious Njoko in Ward 20 in the Alfred Duma Municipality – KZN238. The seat was retained by the party with 50.99% of the 2 928 votes cast. Voter turnout was 57.24%.
KwaZulu-Natal : Siphosakhe Zithulele Zulu in Ward 6 in the Newcastle Municipality – KZN252. The seat was retained by the party with 70.93% of the 2 131 votes cast. Voter turnout was 41.56%
Limpopo : Ntsako Lauward Ngobeni in Ward 3 in the New Municipality – LIM345. The seat was retained by the party with 76.46% of the 2 708 votes cast. Voter turnout was 51.70%
Mpumalanga : Sipho Thulani Mnisi in Ward 7 in the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality – MP301. The seat was retained by the party with 83.11% of the 1 741 votes cast. Voter turnout was 46.07%
Mpumalanga : Mhlupheki Meshack Thombeni in Ward 6 in the Victor Khanye Municipality – MP311. The seat was retained by the party with 55.75% of the 1 933 votes cast. Voter turnout was 51.84%
Western Cape : Thembisile Mabhuti Batembu in Ward 108 in the City of Cape Town – CPT. The seat was retained by the party with 57.52% of the 6 356 votes cast. Voter turnout was 32.30%
The new councillor for the Democratic Alliance is :
Northern Cape: Ebrahim Mohammed Sulliman in Ward 2 in the Kgatelopele Municipality – NC086. The seat was retained by the party with 72.07% of the 1 340 cast. Voter turnout was 63.69%.
The new councillor for the Economic Freedom Fighters is :
Limpopo: Jonas Evans Mothapo in Ward 10 in the Polokwane Municipality – LIM354. The party won the seat with 54.21% of the 4 092 votes cast. Voter turnout was 48.09%. The seat was previously held by the African National Congress.
