How To Check Criminal Records at MIE Portal?
Verify and check an individual’s criminal record. MIE uses the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) technology to determine the criminal background status of a person.

Criminal record checks in South Africa are legally required to be verified by using a set of digitally captured fingerprints. Using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), fingerprints are checked electronically directly against the South African Police Services (SAPS) database.
MIE uses software provided by AFISwitch to allow you to quickly and easily capture fingerprints on SmartScreen and/or ePCV and submit them to check for a possible criminal record. The average turnaround time from AFISwitch is two-business days. MIE is an accredited AFISwitch reseller.
Approved Fingerprints:
As a registered AFISwitch reseller, MIE hosts over 5.8 million digital fingerprints that have been previously submitted to MIE. Registered MIE clients can access an individual’s fingerprints that were previously taken and stored on the MIE database.
MIE makes the individual fingerprint set available if the following requirements have been met:
** Consent by the individual
** The fingerprint set is of clear and high quality
** An Approved Fingerprint request has been submitted for the individual to MIE via SmartScreen or ePCV.
Criminal by Afis IDV – Biometric Verification:
This service provides feedback on the criminal record status of the candidate, including whether the thumbprints match the Identity number, if the names and surname of the person is linked to the identity number and whether the person is alive or deceased.
MIE AFISwitch Fingerprint Capturing Training
MIE offers training on digital fingerprint capturing using the Sagem MorphoSmart 300 on MIE’s in-house software SmartScreen and ePCV. Training is available nation-wide, and Sagem MorphoSmart 300 fingerprint capture devices are available for purchase. MIE verifies whether or not your prospective employee has a Criminal Record through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
The verification process is seamless:
** Train your staff on capturing fingerprints at MIE.
** Purchase the MSO300 device from MIE.
** Capture and submit your candidate’s fingerprints to MIE for verification.
MIE SAPS 91A Fingerprints
The implementation of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) in certain regions/offices might not be viable as the requirement for criminal verifications is merely required on an adhoc basis. With this in mind, MIE is able to offer companies an alternative solution.
SAPS 91A Form Verification Process:
1. On a Company Letterhead
2. The letter must contain the following information:
** The company name requesting a Criminal by AFIS Check to be performed on the candidate;
** The reason for the request, e.g. Employment Purposes;
** The candidate details (Full Names and Surnames, Maiden Names, ID number, Passport Number, Date of Birth.)
3. If order numbers are required for processing, please also add it to the letter.
4. Set of Original Fingerprints on a SAPS 91(a) form (available from all Police Stations.)
5. Please make sure that the SAPS 91(a) form contains the following information:
** Details of Police Officer who took the fingerprints;
** SAPS Date Stamp.
6. Clear copy of ID/Passport document.
7. Signed MIE Indemnity form.
8. Original Fingerprints, documentation and information are couriered to MIE.
9. Once all requirements are met, the criminal check is submitted to Afiswitch and feedback will be supplied within ten business days.
Alternative SAPS 91A Form Verification Process:
** Alternatively the manual fingerprints/SAPS 91A process can now be done via EPCV/SmartScreen® by selecting the specific request namely; Criminal by AFIS- Manual, where you are required to attach the indemnity form and copy of the person’s ID to the request before submitting it to MIE.
** Please note that the original set of fingerprints SAPS 91A will still need to be couriered to MIE 252 Jean Avenue Jean Park Chambers Building 1 Centurion 0157, as we cannot use a scanned copy.
