Junior Database Administrator

Description :
** The Junior Database Administrator will be responsible for the effective implementation, maintenance and repair of all Southern View Finance’s databases (South Africa, United Kingdom, Mauritius and/or third party hosted database environments); monitoring and improving database performance and capacity, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard the databases.

The focus of the role will primarily be on OLTP, including performance management, assisting with effective design and development as well as the coordinating and communication of deployments to production. The position will report to the DBA Manager.

Requirements :
Key Performance Areas :
Database Administration and Design :
** Assist with the creation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring, and deployment of databases in both development and live service environments
** Assist with facilitating the best possible system performance from the perspective of the applications and reports using the databases

** Perform regular database maintenance activities by following internal processes (data loads, data fixes, schema updates, database copies, software installs/upgrades/patches etc.) in a secure, accurate and timeous manner
** Provide support and advice to development team for new and existing SQL code
** Conduct daily routine tasks including Health Checks and assist with the automation of regular database support activities

** Assist with providing an effective database security management support
** Ensure that backups are done and restored when requested in a timeous manner
** Assist with setting up new database environments, configuring in adherence with applications

Capacity Planning & Availability Measures :
** Assist with producing monthly reports

SQL Monitoring and Performance Optimization :
** Monitor SQL Server and ensure monitoring tools are in alignment with business KPA’s
** Identify poor performing SQL code (stored procedures, function etc.)
** Assist with code improvements on an ad hoc basis, problematic code will be investigated and improved
** Follow deployment life cycle

Deployment planning, execution and roll back plan :
** Accurate and timeous implementation and communication of deployment schedule
** Implement deploys and rollbacks, impact and interdependencies considered

Business Continuity Planning :
** Assist with Disaster Recovery design, planning, setup and configuration; including database restores, mirroring, availability group configuration, application configuration, testing

Operational Incidents :
** Take care of existing operational incidents and tickets timeously and correctly
** Provide an efficient 2nd line support and assist with database related queries
** Assist with documenting all DB processes
** Adhere to company policies and operating procedures
** Adhere to Response and Resolution SLAs
** Ensure that Incident management is adhered to in accordance with (ITIL)

Qualification :
** Strongly recommended: MCSA: SQL Server and or MCSE: Data Platform
** Recommended diploma or degree in IT, BSc IT from recognized SA Technikons or Universities

Experience :
** 1 – 3 years MS SQL DBA experience
** Experience as a Software Developer (advantageous)

Functional Competencies :
