UNIC Pretoria Internship Programme :
** The United Nations Information Centre in Pretoria provides opportunities for university-level students to undertake internships. Please note that the internships are unpaid with no stipends at all. Students can utilize and enhance their educational experience through practical work assignments, while supporting the work of UN Information Centre.

** An internship with UNIC provides exposure to the daily activities undertaken by the office, as well as an opportunity to gain first-hand experience on a diverse range of topics and issues comprising the work of the United Nations.
** Interns get involved, inter alia, in assisting with media monitoring, drafting press reviews, reports and media analyses, preparing speeches on particular UN-related topics, researching background information in response to queries and providing substantive assistance in the dissemination of information and other logistical support to the centre, including assisting the UNIC librarian.
** Much of the work is ‘reactive’ and can include a very diverse range of responsibilities outside the specific terms of reference.
Eligibility :
Interns are assigned to the following areas according to their specific competencies in any of the following :
** Communication, Administration, Information Technology, Library Science.
** The Internship period is for a fixed period of three (3) months initially and this can be extended to six months contingent on performance, availability and the agreement of the intern and the UNIC office.
** As previously stated, there is no remuneration at all.
Prospective interns are expected to be in their third year or above of study i.e. Honours, Masters, PhD, in any of the following fields :
** International Relations, Political Studies, Communication, Journalism, Information Technology, Library Science, Human Resources, Administration and related subjects.
Application Procedures :
** Applicants are required to download and complete the UNIC Internship Application form and submit it by email.
** Clearly mention the period you are available and sign the forms. If you do not receive an e-mail acknowledgement, your application may not have been received. In such cases, please re-submit the application.
** Once your application is accepted, you will be asked to sign and submit the UNIC Internship Contract form.
Conditions of application :
** Interns will be required to assemble news headlines and clippings; hence editorial skills are essential to the internship.
** Prior to starting, interns must have a reasonable understanding of the role of media in South Africa.
** All accommodation, travel arrangements, medical coverage, visas and other living expenses will be borne by the intern, or the sponsoring government or institution.
** UNIC Pretoria cannot provide any financial support, and it accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship.
** It is strongly advised that interns get full travel and medical insurance.
** UNIC Pretoria is not responsible for any claims by any party where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of action by the interns during their internship.
** Students who undertake an internship at UNIC Pretoria are subject to an internal evaluation.
** UNIC Pretoria retains all rights to reject candidates who are not performing adequately, and without prior notice, including to their educational institutions.
** UNIC Pretoria cannot guarantee any employment whatsoever after completion of the internship.
** Interns are strongly encouraged to engage in extramural activities supporting the office and are expected to give inputs with relation to the day-to-day functioning of the office.
** Interns must state clearly in their application form whether or not the internship is compulsory in light of their studies.
** If so, the responsible tutor at the university needs to submit a formal letter supporting the request.
** He/she will be briefed and will be sent an evaluation at the end of the internship.
** If granted a position, interns must contact the office two weeks prior to the confirmed date of assignment by email to remind staff of their arrival, providing further details of flights, .
** The Friday before the commencement of any assignment, there is a half-day compulsory training session at the UNIC office in Pretoria.
** International interns are required to get a security briefing.
** Interns with an assignment of a month or less are not entitled to leave days.
** Interns assigned for a period of more than 1 month are entitled to 2.5 days leave per worked month.
** All administrative requirements apply.
** A dress code should be observed at all times. Failure to comply with these rules can result in the cancellation of the internship.
