Functions of DWS
Some of the functions of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) include:
Water resource management:
The DWS is responsible for the management and regulation of South Africa’s water resources, including the allocation of water usage rights, management of dams and water storage facilities, and monitoring of water quality.
Water infrastructure development:
The DWS is responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of water infrastructure, including dams, pipelines, and water treatment plants.
Water conservation and demand management:
The DWS promotes the sustainable use of water resources through conservation and demand management strategies, such as water-efficient technologies, water-saving education campaigns, and water restrictions during times of drought.
Sanitation services:
The DWS is responsible for providing and maintaining sanitation services in South Africa, including the construction and maintenance of sanitation infrastructure, the provision of sanitation services to rural and urban areas, and the promotion of proper sanitation practices.
