** The core purpose of the Discovery Health Medical Scheme (DHMS) is to achieve, in a sustainable manner, the best possible value for its members, which comprises the benefits, quality of care and service levels to members relative to their contributions to the Scheme.

** Discovery Health Medical Scheme is an open medical scheme. Any member of the public can join the Scheme, subject to its Rules. Covering 2 691 852 beneficiaries at 31 December 2015, it is the largest open medical scheme in South Africa with an open medical scheme market share of some 53%.

** Discovery Health Medical Scheme continues to be the industry leader in the funding of evidence-based, cost-effective, quality healthcare and in supporting the enhancement of the healthcare system for Scheme members and stakeholders, against a backdrop of ongoing economic pressure on consumers, rising healthcare costs, an increased burden of disease, and intense public debate around healthcare issues.

** Despite ever-increasing complexities within the private healthcare system, the Scheme continues to deliver on its core purpose of funding quality, cost-effective healthcare cover for all its members.
** Member reserves of R12.9 billion are further testimony to the Scheme’s significant financial stability and strength.

** The Scheme is a non-profit entity governed by the Medical Schemes Act No 131 of 1998, as amended (the Act), and is regulated by the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS).
** The Scheme belongs to its members and an independent Board of Trustees (the Board) oversees its business.

** The Scheme fully adheres to all aspects of best practice governance as required by the Act as well as the requirements of the King III Code on Corporate Governance in South Africa.
** Key focus areas of the Board of Trustees are continuous improvement and innovation at all levels of strategy and business delivery, while ensuring the sustainability of the Scheme.

** As part of its ongoing relational and transactional governance objectives, the Board of Trustees institutes periodic independent governance reviews to assess the effectiveness of the Board and its committees as well as the value received from its Administrator and Managed Care Provider, Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd, in terms of the Scheme’s administration and managed healthcare mandates.

** The Scheme operates by way of a formal contractual arrangement with Discovery Health, with its business model based on Vested® outsourcing.

** The Board and its committees also perform annual peer and effectiveness reviews to address and strengthen governance processes.
** The Scheme’s leadership position and claims paying ability in the private healthcare industry has again been validated by Global Credit Ratings’ AA+ rating of the Scheme.

** This is the highest rating possible in South Africa for medical schemes and Discovery Health Medical Scheme has been the only open medical scheme to achieve this rating, and has sustained this rating for 15 consecutive years.

** Discovery Health Medical Scheme will continue its focus on ensuring best practice governance, continuous product and service innovation, appropriate risk management strategies, the optimisation of its business model and making members healthier.

** With the continued sustainability of the Scheme and the wellbeing of its members as top priority, the Scheme’s Board of Trustees will ensure that members continue to receive significant value from the Scheme and Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd for the foreseeable future.
