SANBI FBIP Scholarships
The Foundational Biodiversity Information Programme (FBIP) is offering the following bursaries for postgraduate studies for the 2018 academic year :
** 8 Honours bursaries with a value of R65,000 each (funding for one year)

** 4 Masters bursaries with a value of R90,000 per year for a maximum of two years
** 1 Doctoral bursary with a value of R120,000 for three years
Programme Background
** The FBIP is a long-term programme to generate, manage and disseminate foundational biodiversity information and knowledge so that this can be managed, secured, disseminated and applied to address the needs of society.
** The programme is funded by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).
Study Field
** Successful applicants will be expected to carry out projects in taxonomy, DNA barcoding, generation of species occurrence records / data or the application / use of such data in addressing questions relevant to global change or the bioeconomy.
Criteria & Eligibility
** The bursaries are offered to South African citizens registering at any national institution in 2018.
** Students who receive any other bursary or scholarship are not eligible to apply for the FBIP bursaries.
** Only students who are registered for full-time study are eligible for the FBIP bursaries (ie. applicants may not be employed on a full-time internship).
** Bursaries will be awarded according to a score calculated based on equity (40%), academic record (30%) and relevance of proposed project to the FBIP focus, support of supervisor and motivation for why the bursary is needed (30%). In the case of honours students who do not have a project, a letter describing potential areas of focus for projects and studies needs to be submitted.
What the Bursary Covers
** The bursary allocation is intended to cover registration fees and / or living expenses. Project supervisors are expected to cover the running costs of projects.
Application Process
Applicants are requested to complete the application cover sheet attached below, and also submit the following documents :
** Full CV
** Certified copy of ID document
** Academic transcript showing marks for courses studied
** Certified copy of highest qualification
** Statement of acceptance and support from supervisor / Head of Department
** Project out-line (1-2 pages) or in case of honours students who do not have a project, a letter describing potential areas of focus for projects and studies needs to be submitted.
** Letter of motivation for scholarship
** Please name each document clearly and send with the application cover sheet to applications AT sanbi.org.za with “FBIP bursary application” in the subject line. Emails must be <10MB.
Closing date: 17h00 on 15 January 2018
** Successful applicants will be notified by 31 January 2018, but payment of the bursary will be according to NRF schedules and may take several weeks.
** Once SANBI has notified the successful applicants they will be expected to register at the university where they will be studying, and to request the university to nominate them on the NRF system for the bursary. The bursary will be awarded to the student by the NRF through the university which will administer the payment of the bursary to the student.
