SASMT Pretoria Ensemble Competition :

** The competition is aimed at developing young musicians through collaborative participation and by encouraging the enjoyment of performing with others.

** Another objective is to foster an understanding, love and appreciation for ensemble music as well as the performance thereof among young musicians.

10 years and under : R2000
13 years and under : R3000
16 years and under : R4000
19 years and under : R5000
Tertiary students : R6000

Important Dates :
Entries Close: 15 June 2017 (School Ensembles)
Entries Close: 30 July 2017 (Tertiary Ensembles)
Round 1: 8 & 9 September 2017
Round 2: 10 September 2017

Participation Tertiary Ensembles :
1. The competition is open to any registered university student.
2. Any students residing in South Africa are eligible for participation.

Competition Rounds :
1. Adjudication will take place over two rounds.
2. All entrants will compete in Round 1.
3. Three finalists will be announced at the end of each category.
4. The finalists will compete in Round 2, which takes place in the form of a Gala Concert.
5. The winner in each category will be announced at the end of the Gala Concert.

Rules And Regulations Tertiary Ensembles :
1. Ensembles have to perform without a conductor.
2. Ensembles can include a minimum of two, and a maximum of 10 players. Any combination of instruments may be used, with the exclusion of electronic instruments and drum kit.

3. Duos consisting of one instrument and piano may enter if both parts play a similar role with appropriate musical difficulty.
4. The focus of the competition is on ensemble playing and not to show case solo players. Adjudicators have the right not to choose such combinations if the criteria are not met.

5. No electronic sound amplification is permitted.
6. The pianist is included in the calculation of the number of players.
7. If required, two pianos will be available on stage.

8. The combination of instruments has to stay the same throughout the programme in both rounds.
9. In four-hand, six-hand and eight-hand piano ensembles, the players may change positions.
10. Own music stands have to be supplied.

11. Original sheet music has to be used.
12. If scores have been downloaded, a letter to verify the source has to be affixed to the copies.
13. Deviations from the scores have to be clearly marked in the adjudicator’s copies.

14. Works which were not originally composed for the specific combination of instruments may be performed, provided that a copy of an arrangement can be presented which stipulates the deviations from the original.

15. Three sets of ring-bound copies must be handed in 30 minutes before the start of each category.
16. Neat concert attire is required.
17. All contestants have to report backstage 20 minutes before their allocated competition times.

Programme Requirements Tertiary Ensembles :
Round 1 :
1. One cyclic work, eg. Haydn Trio, OR three contrasting pieces from at least two different style periods.
2. Maximum duration is 30 minutes.

Round 2 :
1. One or two movements from the cyclic work OR two of the three works presented during Round 1 must be performed.
2. Maximum duration 15 minutes.

Adjudication :
1. A panel of three adjudicators will judge the performances.
2. The adjudicators have the right to withhold prizes.
3. The decision of the adjudicators is final and no further correspondence will be allowed.
