Research Laboratory Technician :
** The Africa Centre for Population Health of the University of KwaZulu-Natal has merged with the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for TB-HIV (K-RITH) to form the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) one of South Africa’s largest independent research institutes.

Brief overview of the position :
** Prof. Thumbi Ndung’u’s laboratory at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is looking for a motivated Research Laboratory Technician to work in a basic research laboratory focusing on immunology and virology of HIV infection in the BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory.
** She/he will focus primarily on flow cytometry, cell sorting and tissue culture. Other techniques may include molecular techniques such as PCR, molecular cloning, qPCR and quantitative immunoassay measurements such as ELISA and Luminex assays.
** Previous experience in these techniques will be an advantage.
** The work will be part of ongoing collaborative studies on HIV and TB immunopathogenesis between the HIV Pathogenesis Programme of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the Ragon Institute (United States) and the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI)
** Individuals with a strong scientific commitment who are willing to learn and develop state of the laboratory techniques are encouraged to apply.
** The individual will also have some responsibility in general laboratory upkeep and helping with other lab research projects as needed.
** The successful candidate will be based in Durban
Minimum Qualifications :
1. BSc/Hons in molecular biology, virology, immunology or equivalent in related field
Minimum Experience :
1. 1 – 3 years research laboratory experience
2. Research experience immunology techniques, in particular flow cytometry
3. High level of computer literacy
Desirable attributes :
1. Committed to research
2. SA Citizen or SA Resident with current work permit
3. Must be able to work with minimum supervision
4. Able to travel overseas for training
Remuneration :
** The remuneration package for this position is market related and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
