Young Community Shapers Competition

** Entries are now open for the 2017 Young Community Shapers Project for those between the ages of 16 – 26 years who run a valid and well established community project that benefits and empowers their community.
** Young Community Shapers is now in its 17th year and runs on an annual basis.
** The objective of the project is to identify, acknowledge and celebrate the work that countless youngsters are doing within their communities.
** It also aims to develop rural communities by helping disadvantaged youth consolidate their achievements.
** Each candidate will need to fill in an entry form and write an essay (max. 300 words) about their project and describe how it is helping their community.
The entrant must ensure that their project fits into one of the sub-categories listed below :
Social Upliftment :
** Including AIDS & Drug Counselling, Feeding Schemes, Cultural Projects, Nursing etc.
Skills Transfer :
** For candidates that invest their time in transferring their skills & knowledge on to community members.
** Entries close on the 10 July 2017 andthereafter the strict judging process will begin where organisers will work through the entries andselect nine finalists.
** The organisers will then go on a road show across the country to verify and film each of these finalists.
** Arrangements will be made with the top nine to transport them to Johannesburg where they will beaccommodated for the national final at The African Pride Hotel.
** The finals will take place on the 25 – 29 August 2017 with the Gala event being held on the 29thAugust 2017.
** The winner of the Young Community Shapers project will receive R 60 000 towards their project to build and sustain the work that they are doing in their respective community.
** The runner up will receive R 30 000 and each of the other finalist will receive R 10 000.
** In 2016 Bulelani Nameka won Young Community Shapers taking home R60 000.00.
** Since winning Bulelani’s project has grown incredibly.
** He currently helps 120 learners and has expanded the service’s he offers the community of Khayelitsha.
** He now provides the community withMathematics, English and homework tutoring; Leadership and computer skills; counselling, mentorships and intervention programmes as well as uniform/stationery initiative and a soup kitchen.
** Bulelani’s community project continues to grow and he is currently in discussion with an overseas sponsor who is interested in buying him a house to run his learning centre from.
