UIF Illness Benefits :
** Workers who become ill have the right to claim from the UIF. Workers (or their representatives) must apply and collect payments at the labour centre of their choice.

Application :
The Unemployment Insurance Act and Unmployment Insurance Contributions Act apply to all employers and workers, but not to –
** workers working less than 24 hours a month for an employer;
** learners;
** public servants;
** foreigners working on contract who are going to be repatriated at the end of their contract;
** Employees in receipt of an old age pension are; since 07/02/2007, no longer excluded from contributing towards UIF; or
** workers who only earn commission.
** Domestic employers and their workers are included under the Act since 1 April 2003.
Who can claim :
You cannot claim if you :
get benefits from :
** the Compensation Fund; or
** an unemployment fund under the Labour Relations Act;
** get Unemployment Benefits from the UIF;
** have been suspended from claiming because of fraud;
** are ill for less than 14 days; or
** refuse medical treatment.
** You can claim only if you are unable to work because of your illness.
** Based on legislation in Section 14, Section 20, Section 36, of the Unemployment Insurance Act
When must I claim :
** You must claim within 6 months of becoming ill.
** Based on Legislation in Section 22 of the Unemployment Insurance Act
How long can I claim for :
** You can claim from the day you stop working until your benefits are used up or you go back to work.
How To Claim UIF Illness Benefits :
** Ill workers must apply for benefits at their nearest labour centre in person or organise for someone to go in their place.
** They must take the necessary documents with them.
Claiming Illness Benefits :
** If workers want to claim illness benefits they must use the following steps
Step 1 : Get the documents ready
Before workers can claim, they must get the following documents ready :
** 13-digit bar-coded ID or passport;
** form UI-2.8 for banking details;
** form UI-19 to show that they are not working;
** form UI-2.7;
** medical certificate from a doctor;
** amplifying medical report; and
** a follow-up form.
Step 2 : Go to the nearest labour centre
** Ill workers must go to the nearest labour centre themselves and hand in the documents.
** If they are too ill, they can organise for someone else to go in their place.
** Staff at the labour centre will assist them with all the processes and give them more information.
Step 3 : Follow all the instructions of the staff at the labour centre
** Staff at the labour centre may ask ill workers to go to the doctor again or to visit the labour centre at certain times.
** Workers should do what they ask, or they may not be able to claim.
Benefit Payments :
How will I be paid :
** Benefit payments can be paid into your bank account.
** If you are too ill to collect payments yourself, someone else may collect the money for you.
** Based on legislation in Section 23, of the Unemployment Insurance Act
Tax :
** No tax is payable on the benefits.
** Based on Legislation in Section 34 of the Unemployment Insurance Act
Over payments :
** If you get more money than you should, you must pay back the extra money.

i stopped working during february 2022 due to ill health my employer was paying since then ,he eventually stopped paying my salary at the end of august 2022.can i apply for assistance from uif? for two months which is not paid and also the coming months?help please
