NWU DHET Fee Adjustment Grant
** Government will subsidise the fee adjustment capped at 8% for all qualifying registered students with gross family income up to R600 000 per annum in 2018.

** This is not a loan, but a grant. The grant will reflect as a credit on the student account once eligibility has been confirmed.
NWU student account offices on each campus have already received the applicable information as well as the application form:
** Applicants who applied for NSFAS funding are not required to submit this application; they will automatically be considered.
** All students who attended Quintile 1, 2 and 3 schools in Grade 12 will automatically be considered upon verification of HEMIS data and will not be required to submit this application.
** Continuing students who have applied and qualified for the DHET Fee Adjustment Grant in 2017 are not required to submit this application; they will automatically be considered as the University will have this information.
Eligibility Criteria
** Only South African citizens and citizens with a permanent South African residency studying towards an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in 2018 will be considered.
** The applicant and direct family (mother, father, spouse or legal guardian) must have a GROSS combined family income up to R600 000 per annum.
** The DHET Grant will ONLY cover tuition fees and university managed accommodation (including operational leases for student accommodation between the university and a service provider).
** Applicants that applied for NSFAS funding are not required to submit this application, they will automatically be considered.
** All students who attended Quintile 1, 2 and 3 schools in Grade 12 will be automatically considered upon verification of HEMIS data and will not be required to submit this application.
** Continuing students who have applied and qualified for the DHET Fee Adjustment Grant in 2017, are not required to submit this application, they will automatically be considered.
Completing The Application
** Please ensure that the application is completed in full. Certified copies of IDs of the parents/spouse and/or legal guardians MUST be attached. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
** Parents, spouses and legal guardians are requested to acknowledge that they understand that personal information will be requested and provided to third parties who will assist the University with verifying income and that their signature to the application constitutes express written consent.
** Ensure that all parties (father/mother/spouse/legal guardian/student) complete and sign the relevant sections.
Appeals :
** Students who are unsuccessful in their application may appeal within 14 days of outcome of decision by completing an Appeals Form which will be loaded on the University’s website.
Required Documents
Documents to be submitted if required for the verification of income process :
** Certified copy of Identity Document of yourself, your parents or legal guardians.
** If either of your parents is deceased, a certified copy of the death certificate.
** Certified or official copy of recent payslip, letter of employment, not older than three months, for each parent, or your guardian or yourself if you are employed.
** Proof of income, bond statement and council rates accounts if parents/guardians are an informal trader/hawker.
** If parents are employed by a company – salary/wage slips of both parents (not required in bullet 3 above.
** IRP5, IT3 and IT12 (last 2 years) if parents/guardians are earning commission.
** Signed and complete 2015 financial statements signed by members; IT14 – Tax return for the business (last 2 years) IT12 – Tax return for the individual (last 2 years) and IT3(b) Income Tax Certificate from the Bank (last 2 years) if parents/guardian/spouse own or are members of a CC/Pty (ltd) and /or sole proprietor.
** Official letter from the Department of Labour if parents/guardian/spouse are unemployed proving unemployment status.
** Copy of an official pension slip or bank statement if parent/guardian receives income such as pension/grant/maintenance/rental/interest from investment.

DHET Funding Frequently Asked Questions
A: What does the President’s statement mean for continuing university students?
1. Will I receive a loan or a bursary in 2018 as a returning NSFAS qualifying student?
In line with the President’s statement, if you are a continuing student in 2018 and were funded by NSFAS in 2017 or earlier, your 2018 NSFAS allocation will now be awarded as a bursary. This NSFAS allocation will not have to be repaid.
2. I am a continuing student at a university and owe NSFAS the loan amount for the 2016 and 2017 academic years. Does the announcement of the President mean that my NSFAS debt will be converted to a bursary?
You will be supported to register and continue your studies from 2018 onwards through bursary funding. Your past loans will not be converted to a bursary at this time.
The Minister of Higher Education and Training after undertaking due diligence and affordability studies in conjunction with the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation and the National Treasury to determine the quantum of funding required to address the debt owed by students to NSFAS and institutions.
If you are a second year student studying towards a three-year qualification in 2018, funding for your second and third year will be in the form of a bursary and will not have to be repaid.
3. As a NSFAS qualifying returning student, do I have to pay a registration/upfront fee to the university?
You do not need to pay a registration/upfront fee. An arrangement has been made with universities to allow you to register. Your registration/upfront fee will be covered by your NSFAS package.
4. I am a continuing student at a university and have applied to NSFAS for the first time in 2018. Will I be considered for financial aid for the 2018 academic year even though I am not a first time entrant?
Yes, you will be considered for financial aid funding, provided you meet the pre-2018 NSFAS’s academic and financial eligibility requirements.
As a continuing student your combined household income threshold will be assessed in terms of the 2017 NSFAS DHET general fund criteria (i.e. up to R122 000 per annum).
5. I am a continuing student at a university and was not funded in prior years, as I did not qualify for NSFAS due to financial ineligibility. For 2018, my combined gross family income is between R122 000 and R350 000 per annum. Does this mean that I am now eligible for NSFAS?
Continuing students who applied for NSFAS by the closing date of the 30 November 2017 will be considered for funding. The criteria that will be applied for returning students’ eligibility for funding will be in terms of the pre 2018 DHET General Fund criteria (i.e. utilising the gross household income threshold of R122 000 per annum).
